Levi G Ruohonen, 25 of Racine has been charged with two counts of felony Homicide by Intox Use of Vehicle (2nd+) and one count of OWI Cause Injury (2+) for having a prior OWI conviction.
According to the criminal complaint, on November 25,2016 at aprox 4:45 p.m. Caledonia Police along with multiple jurisdictions responded to the area of 4 Mile and Short Road for an accident. Citizens were already on scene trying to assist. Upon arrival officers quickly tried to render aid to parties that were trapped in the victim vehicle. Officers were unable to discern where the truck ended and the sedan started noting it appeared that the pick up truck had smashed into the sedan.
Rescue personnel continued to render aid to the victims while officers went to the defendants vehicle and found him with a witness laid out in the front seat of his vehicle with no apparent injuries.
According to the complaint the defendant was removed from his truck and had a hard time maintaining his balance and stumbled when he walked. Witnesses reported seeing the defendants vehicle and that there were no brake lights visible, slam into the victim vehicle at full speed. The defendant allegedly fell asleep in the squad car before Oak Creek Rescue arrived to transport him to Froedert Hospital. Officers noted they smelled a strong odor of intoxicants and glassy and bloodshot eyes when emergency personnel were asking him to step out of the squad car and the defendant was not responding to their commands.
Once medically clear from the hospital the defendant was transported to Racine County Jail and interviewed by Caledonia Police where he stated that he had left work that day, went home, went to a hockey game in Milwaukee had 3 to 4 beers and then stopped at “On the Border” and insisted he had one to 2 beers with a friend. The defendant when told by officers that 2 victims died as a result of this crash appeared to be in disbelief. Results from a blood draw were not available at the time of posting
